Keyhole Spays
When it comes to spaying, most people imagine a traditional "open" surgery with a larger incision.
But there’s a modern alternative: the laparoscopic spay.
Also called a "keyhole spay," this minimally invasive technique offers important benefits for both dogs and their owners.
What is a laparoscopic spay?
A laparoscopic spay uses small incisions (usually two or three) and a tiny camera to remove the ovaries.
This is similar to keyhole surgeries often used in human medicine.
Instead of a large opening, where the surgeons hands enter the abdomen; the keyhole surgeon (Dr Tristan) works by using special instruments through small incisions (known as ports), guided by the camera.
Dr Tristan has been performing keyhole spays for almost a decade, and has trained alongside human surgeons.
Why is a keyhole spay better?
Is a laparoscopic spay right for my dog?
Most healthy dogs are good candidates, but every pet is different.
We’re always happy to discuss your dog's specific needs and help you decide what’s best.
How long will my dog be at the clinic?
Most dogs come in in the morning and go home the same afternoon or early evening. We keep them under close observation until they’re awake and comfortable.
Are there any downsides?
Laparoscopic spays require specialist equipment and extra surgical training, which can make them more expensive than a traditional spay.
However, many owners feel the benefits are well worth it, especially for active or sensitive dogs.
What about older dogs?
Older dogs can often still have a laparoscopic spay safely. In fact, some older dogs may benefit even more from the reduced pain and quicker healing. A thorough pre-operative health check is always done first.
Will my dog need a cone?
We still recommend using an Elizabethan collar ("cone/lampshade") or a protective body suit, but because the wounds are small, many dogs are much less interested in licking or chewing at them.
