Sun Safety

We’re often asked how to protect dogs and cats from sunburn, especially those with light fur or sensitive areas like noses and ear tips.

We’ve looked carefully at what’s available, and in our opinion, FiltaClear seems to be one of the best sunblock options for pets.

Why not just use human sunscreen?

Many human products contain zinc oxide, salicylates, and PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) all of which are toxic to pets if licked and swallowed.

Even small amounts can cause serious stomach upset or worse.

That’s why it’s so important to choose a product made specifically for animals.

Why use FiltaClear?

FiltaClear was developed specifically for sensitive animal skin. It acts like a natural “second skin,” creating a protective, nearly invisible barrier against harsh sun and wind.

It has an SPF of 24–27, it offers strong protection from both UVA and UVB rays, helping prevent sunburn and long-term skin damage.

A big advantage is that FiltaClear contains a bitter tasting agent (Bitrex) to discourage licking, so the cream stays on and works as intended.

How to apply FiltaClear

When applying FiltaClear, always start with a test patch on a small area and watch for any redness or irritation over 24 hours.

Once you know your pet tolerates it well, apply a thin, even layer to exposed areas like the nose, ear tips, and belly.

For maximum protection, leave a visible film and reapply two to three times a day, especially after swimming or lots of outdoor play.

Avoid using it around the mouth or on the teats of lactating animals.
