Puppy Care
Bringing home a puppy is such an exciting time; full of cuddles, chaos and learning. Those early months are key to helping your pup grow into a happy, healthy adult dog. Our team at Battersea Square Vets is here to guide you through every stage, from first vaccinations to training and nutrition.
We love getting to know new puppies and helping them settle in. Our aim is to make every visit calm, positive and full of gentle encouragement, setting them up to enjoy vet visits for life.

1 / Your Puppy’s First Vet Visit
Your puppy’s first appointment is a complete health check with one of our vets. We’ll:
-
Check their heart, teeth, eyes, ears, joints and overall development
-
Plan their vaccination schedule
-
Advise on flea, tick and worm protection
-
Discuss diet, toilet training and socialisation
-
Answer any questions you have — we’re always happy to help
We’ll also talk about microchipping (a legal requirement before 8 weeks if not already done by the breeder) and early neutering options depending on breed and age.
2 / Vaccinations
Puppies usually start vaccinations from 8 weeks old, with a second dose 2–4 weeks later. These protect against distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and leptospirosis (L2 or L4). Once complete, your puppy can safely meet other dogs and explore the outside world. Annual boosters keep them protected for life.
3 / Flea and Worm Protection
Puppies need regular protection from fleas, ticks and worms, even if they haven’t been outdoors yet. We’ll tailor a plan for their weight and age, and make sure it’s easy to keep up to date.
4 / Neutering
We usually recommend neutering from around 6 months of age, but this depends very much on your puppy’s breed, size and behaviour. We follow WSAVA guidelines. We offer both keyhole (laparoscopic) and traditional options and will help you decide the best timing for your dog.
5 / Feeding and Behaviour
Puppies grow quickly, so good nutrition is essential. We’ll guide you on feeding routines, switching diets, toilet training, and early behaviour. Our nurses love giving advice on socialisation and handling, helping your puppy feel confident and relaxed.
6 / Ongoing Care
We encourage regular weight checks and cuddle clinics to keep track of growth and make visits a fun experience. It’s the best way to help your puppy feel comfortable at the vet for years to come.
Book your puppy's first appointment today, and we’ll make sure their first visit is as gentle and positive as possible.
