Kitten Care
Bringing home a kitten is exciting, and a little bit daunting!
Those first few months are the best time to set up good habits for life. Our team at Battersea Square Vets is here to guide you through every stage, from first vaccinations to neutering and nutrition advice.
We love seeing kittens grow into confident, healthy cats. Our approach is calm, gentle, and focused on helping them (and you) feel at ease during visits.

1 / Your Kitten’s First Vet Visit
Your kitten’s first check-up is a full health examination with one of our vets. We’ll:
-
Check their weight, heart, teeth, eyes, ears and tummy
-
Discuss flea and worm prevention
-
Review diet and litter training
-
Plan their vaccination schedule
-
Answer any questions you have — no matter how small
We’ll also make sure your kitten is microchipped, as this becomes a legal requirement before they’re 20 weeks old.
2 / Vaccinations
Kittens usually have their first vaccinations at around 9 weeks, followed by a second dose 3–4 weeks later. These protect against enteritis, cat flu, and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). After that, they’ll need annual boosters to stay protected.
3 / Flea and Worm Protection
Even indoor kittens can pick up fleas or worms. We’ll recommend safe, vet-approved products for their age and weight, and show you how to apply them correctly.
4 / Neutering
We usually recommend neutering at around 5–6 months of age. It helps prevent unwanted litters and reduces certain health and behaviour issues.
We’ll give you advice on the best timing for your kitten’s breed and lifestyle.
5 / Feeding and Behaviour
Nutrition plays a huge role in growth and development. We’ll help you choose a balanced diet and support you with feeding routines, toilet training, and socialisation. If your kitten is a little shy or nervous, our nurses can give practical tips to build their confidence.
6 / Ongoing Care
We love seeing kittens back for their regular weight checks, boosters, and cuddle visits. It helps them get used to coming in, and makes future vet trips calmer as they grow up.
Book your kitten’s first appointment today, and we’ll make sure their first visit is as gentle and positive as possible.
