Caring for a puppy involves providing for its needs, including a safe environment, proper nutrition, socialisation, training, and veterinary care.

A new arrival is exciting, and we know there are lots of questions!

New puppy owners should focus on creating a comfortable sleeping space, establishing a routine, and being prepared for nighttime toilet breaks!

Here are some essential aspects of puppy care:

Nutrition:

Puppies need a balanced diet formulated for their age and breed, with multiple small meals throughout the day. Always provide fresh water. Your vet is the best person to advise on the best diet for your puppies age and breed.

Housing:

Puppy-proof your home to remove hazards like chemicals and electrical cords, trust us, they will chew on them. Provide a comfortable and safe sleeping area, such as a crate, with comfy bedding.

Socialisation and Training:

Start socialisation and training early, focusing on positive reinforcement and introducing new experiences gradually. This is especially important in the first 14-16 weeks of life.

Veterinary Care:

Schedule regular vet visits for vaccinations, parasite prevention, and general health checkups, especially in the first 6 months.

At Battersea Square Vets, we like to see our puppies once a month, partly to make sure they are on schedule with vaccines and parasite control, but also to check their growth and weight gain, and crucially too to get them used to coming into the clinic, that way, if they have to see us when they are unwell, they already know the team and know the clinic too.

Hygiene:

Keep the puppy clean and dry, and be prepared for accidents during toilet training.

Warmth:

Puppies need to be kept warm, especially if they are not with their mother, so when they arrive at your home, they need a comfy cozy bed.

Exercise:

You need to provide appropriate exercise and mental stimulation for healthy growth and development. However its important not to over-exercise, as this can put too much strain on young joints, and lead to health problems.
